[Result] Webinar Workshop for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) utilization to introduce advanced decarbonizing technology in the PALM countries

Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of Japan organized “Webinar Workshop for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) utilization to introduce advanced decarbonizing technology in the PALM countries” on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. This webinar received more than 200 applications from Pacific Island countries, Japan, etc.

In the workshop, the opening remarks was provided by the Mr. ONO, Director General, Global Environment Bureau, Ministry of the Environment, Japan and Dr. Filimon, Deputy Secretary General, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, then representatives from the Pacific Community and SPREP (Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme) introduced renewable energy potential and current status of NDCs in Pacific Island countries. Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of Japan explained Japan’s climate policy and shared the overview of the PALM9, and Ministry of the Environment, Japan, explained recent development of the JCM. Global Environment Centre Foundation and ADB each introduced JCM Financing Programme and Japan Fund for JCM and their good examples. In Section 2, Palau Energy Administration introduced examples of existing JCM projects in Palau, and Pacific Consultants Co., Ltd explained challenges and possible solutions for development of JCM projects in islands countries. In the panel discussion, the panelists actively exchanged opinions on issues and solutions for JCM project formation in Pacific Island countries and how JCM can contribute to SDGs and NDCs in Pacific Island countries.

From the results of the questionnaire, many respondents were generally satisfied with the content of the webinar.

Results of the JCM workshop is expected to foster understandings for JCM in Pacific Island countries and to lead to development of a future JCM project as new JCM partner countries.
