UNFCCC COP17 & CMP7 Side Event in Durban, South Africa

Mitigation and Adaptation Planning in Developing Countries and Japan’s Cooperation

On November 29, 2011, the side event titled “Mitigation and Adaptation Planning in Developing Countries and Japan’s Cooperation” took place at the United Nations Climate Change Conference Durban, 2011 (COP17 and CMP7). The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Keio University, the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) and Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center, Japan (OECC).

In realizing a low carbon and climate change-resilient society, mitigation and adaptation planning is a key. Driven by strong desire to cope with climate change and to realize sustainable development in such a context, as well as the international negotiation, various efforts for planning, and strengthening such efforts are in progress in developing countries. The Side Event introduced most updated information on relevant activities in developing countries and cooperation by Japan. The Event was chaired by Mr. Taka Hiraishi, IGES.

The Event was attended by more than 70 experts including negotiators, development cooperation practitioners as well as researchers. During discussion, there are various questions and comments, such as ones commending Japan’s holistic approach to support both adaptation and mitigation in developing countries, and expressing interests in participating in Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM) etc.
