[Event Report] Webinar on the Exploration of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in the United Arab Emirates (March 5, 2024)

On March 5th (Tuesday), 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE (MOCCAE) conducted an online seminar titled " Webinar on the Exploration of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in the United Arab Emirates ". Over 150 people registered for the event.

The seminar was formally inaugurated opening remarks from Her Excellency Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, the Acting Assistant Undersecretary of the Green Development & Climate Change Sector, Permanent Mission of the UAE to IRENA, and His Excellency Mr. Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE (MOCCAE) provided insight into the national climate change policy. Following this, METI presented the recent developments of JCM, and PACIFIC CONSULTANTS CO., LTD. elucidated key points for applying for Joint Crediting Mechanism Feasibility Study (JCM FS). The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) introduced the overview of the NEDO's JCM Demonstration Project, which was followed by the detailed explanations of domestic decarbonization initiatives by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE. Additionally, Zenmov Inc. shared findings of their study after conducting investigations in the UAE under the JCM FS this fiscal year. The seminar provided a platform for an interactive Q&A session to discuss the utilization of JCM in the UAE.

Based on the feedback received from the participants via a survey, it can be inferred that the webinar was well-received overall, with the participants expressing satisfaction and appreciation towards the informative and enlightening nature of the event. Some participants expressed their preference for in-person seminars, while Japanese companies have shown interest for further discussion with the UAE stakeholders to promote JCM in their respective business domains. The feedback collected will be carefully considered for future events and initiatives.

Expanding upon the insights acquired during the seminar, it is expected that the comprehension of JCM in the UAE will continue to develop, paving the way for the considerations and implementation of specific JCM FS projects, NEDO's JCM Demonstration Project, and private JCM in the times to come.
