Indonesia: Energy Efficient Refrigerants to Cold Chain Industry [Mayekawa Manufacturing Co., Ltd.]
2017.08.31
In October 2016, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted, which strengthen the control on fluorocarbons.
“Alternative freon” became widely used instead of conventional fluorocarbon with a high ozone depletion potential (ODP). Alternative freon cannot be ignored in order to steadily promote the Paris Agreement, due to its high global warming potential (GWP).
Recovery and destruction of alternative freon is an additional cost for business operators and business merits are hard to see, hence measures are difficult to take independently.
This JCM project which introduces Energy Efficient Refrigerators using natural refrigerants with zero ODP at the food and cold chain industry warehouses in Indonesia, also prohibits release of fluorocarbon used in existing refrigerators. Inspired by this project, non-fluorocarbon projects in other JCM partner countries have been conducted.
